Before & After School Care

The Phoenix Elementary School District is excited to announce before and after-school care services to support our families for the 2026-2027 school year! Programs will be offered by the YMCA or Boys and Girls Club, depending on your school. Please note that the available services and costs have changed at some sites.

Note: Childcare for all preschool students is offered at the Y Academy at Monterey Park. No-cost transportation is provided between Phoenix #1 schools and Monterey Park to give families flexible options for full-day support.


Program Descriptions & Rates

Boys & Girls Club of the Valley

Scholarships are available. Please contact the specific club branch directly to apply.

  • Hours:

    • After-school care runs from school dismissal time until 7:00 p.m. 

    • Both the I.G. Homes and Warner & Shirley Gabel Branch follow the Phoenix #1 District calendar

  • I.G. Homes Branch (1601 W. Sherman St. | ☎ 602-254-5814)

    • Serves: Bethune, Capitol, Kenilworth, Lowell & Magnet Traditional (students will be bused to this branch)

    • Rates: 

      • Ages 5–12: $30 annual membership + $40/month after-school program

      • Teens (13–17): $30 annual membership (after-school program included with membership at no additional cost)

  • Warner & Shirley Gabel Branch (1330 N. 15th St. | ☎ 602-252-7968)

    • Serves: Edison, Emerson, Garfield, Herrera & Whittier (students will be bused to this branch)

    • Rates:

      • Ages 5–12: $30 annual membership + $60/month after-school program

      • Teens (13–17): $30 annual membership (after-school program included with membership at no additional cost)

    • Garfield Student Special: $30 total fee for the entire school year for the after-school program

    • Harmony at the Park Apartments Special: A bus will transport students from the club back to the apartments (1950 E Polk St) at 6:15 p.m. every weekday. Parents must complete a transportation form at the club to secure a seat on the bus.

Activities include: Homework help, Sports, Games, Art, STEM, Teen Center, and Leadership Training.

YMCA Before & After-School Programs

On-site care directly at your child’s school. The YMCA accepts DES Child Care Assistance and offers internal scholarships.

  • Locations: Bethune, Capitol, Kenilworth, Magnet Traditional, Shaw Montessori, Whittier
  • Hours: 
    • Before-school care begins at 6:30 a.m. and ends at school start time
    • After-school care runs from school dismissal time until 6:00 p.m. 
  • Rates:
    • Before Care Only: $80/month
    • After Care Only: $200/month
    • Before & After Care: $250/month

Activities include: Homework assistance, STEM, arts, physical activity, and district academic alignment.

Y Academy at Monterey Park

Location: 2301 North 3rd Street | ☎ 602-253-6181. The YMCA accepts DES Child Care Assistance and offers internal scholarships.

  • Preschool (Emerson, Kenilworth, Lowell & Shaw Montessori): Students will be bused from schools to Monterey Park for after-school care
  • Emerson K-5: Students will be bused between Emerson and Monterey Park for both before and after-school care
  • Faith North: Students will be bused between Faith North and Monterey Park for morning or afternoon sessions. 
    • Faith North students can attend full days on Wednesdays when school is not in session.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I register?
    • Follow the appropriate registration link above. For in-person support, visit your school or the District Office.
  • When should I register?
    • As soon as possible. Providers use registration numbers to plan staffing and group sizes.
  • When do services begin?
    • Before and after-school care begins on the first day of school.
  • Will there still be sports?
    • Yes! After-school athletics continue for 6th–8th graders.
  • Who supervises these programs?
    • All providers are CPR / First Aid trained, background-checked, and trained to ensure safe, engaging, and supportive environments.
  • How do I know if my child has been accepted?
    • YMCA: You will receive an email confirmation of your registration
    • Boys & Girls Club: Registration is confirmed after payment and parent orientation are completed. 
  • What happens on early release days?
    • Programs will adjust schedules to be open.
  • Is food or a snack provided?
    • Yes. Providers offer an afternoon snack or meal. 
  • Can my child attend only a few days a week?
    • This depends on the provider. The YMCA, for example, bills monthly regardless of attendance. Contact your provider to discuss part-time options.
  • What if my child has special needs or an IEP?
    • All programs strive to accommodate individual needs. Share details during registration so staff can prepare appropriate support.
